In today's digital age, it's all too easy for kids (and adults!) to spend hours glued to screens, whether it's watching TV, playing video games, or scrolling through social media. While technology certainly has its place in modern life, it's essential to encourage kids to stay active and engaged in the real world.
As a Dance Teacher, Personal Trainer and Yoga instructor, I love to come up with fun activities for my family to keep us moving and away from screens.
With the school holidays coming up, I thought I would share some of our favourite ways to get active:
- Dance Party: We love to turn up the music and host a spontaneous dance party in our living room! Encouraging the kids to let loose and show off their best dance moves. Not only is dancing a great form of exercise, but it's also a fantastic way for kids to express themselves creatively and boost their mood. Plus, it's something the whole family can enjoy together!
2. Outdoor Adventures: Take advantage of the great outdoors and go on an adventure with your kids. Whether it's a walking trail you heard about, a bike ride around the neighbourhood, or a game of tag in the park, outdoor activities are a fantastic way to get moving and explore the world around you. It’s also a great way to get some fresh air and vitamin D in the process!
3. Sports and Games: Organise a friendly game of football, soccer or basketball in your backyard or the local park. If you don't have access to an outdoor space, consider setting up a mini obstacle course or indoor scavenger hunt to keep things exciting.
4. Creative Play: Encourage your kids to get creative and use their imaginations to set up a DIY obstacle course using household items like cushions, chairs, and blankets.
5. Family Fitness Challenges: Turn exercise into a fun challenge by setting goals and tracking progress as a family. Create a sticker chart or reward system to incentivise participation and celebrate achievements along the way. Whether it's completing a certain number of push-ups per day, mastering a new yoga pose, or going for a family walk after dinner, make fitness a family affair.
